The call of CareersTV keeps bringing Lynn back. She’s very happy to return from maternity leave this year. Lynn has produced live television and magazine style shows for the last 10 years – and is still suffering from the bug!
Lynn got her feet wet in broadcasting at the age of 17, doing a news feature segment for the community radio station in her hometown of Saskatoon, SK. Thrilled to be telling people’s stories, Lynn got a degree in Jouarnalism and Communications at the University of Regina. That lead to an internship at ACCESS the Education Station, and the rest, as they say, is history. Since then, Lynn has been a researcher, reporter, associate producer, host, and producer for various incarnations of CareersTV and its sister show, HelpTV. She has also logged a lot of frequent flyer miles on assignments throughout Canada, Mexico, the U.K., France, and Japan.
First Job:
Don’t hate me because I may have interrupted one of your peaceful family dinners… yes, I was a telemarketer! In university I did telemarketing for a financial planning company in Saskatoon. It was tough work, but my boss actually managed to make it fun. I developed a thick skin and learned that persistence pays.
Foot in the Door:
I fell in love with television during a practicum at the local CTV station in Saskatoon. I remember thinking, “I can’t believe people get paid to do this. I’d do it for free!” Unfortunately, it seems my first boss in the television world must have been a mind reader because that’s pretty much what I got paid! But in actuality, this unpaid experience is what sets you above other candidates when you’re just getting started in a new industry.
What I Like About CareersTV:
Television is about turning nothing into something. I love finding entertaining, unique new stories that inspire people to create a meaningful and rewarding life. It’s finding the gem of story idea from a far-flung location and getting down to the heart and soul of it, the reason our interviewees do what they do. I also love that we live what we preach at CareersTV. I’m thrilled to be back in the CareersTV fold, doing a job I love, with people I admire - and doing it all part-time because I’ve got two fabulous little girls at home. This work-life balance is all part of that career journey that CareersTV believes in so strongly.
