Jana OConnor
Segment Producer
Jana is a brand new segment producer on CareersTV, but she has a long history with the show. She started out volunteering as a careers expert on L & J News and went on to work as the Web Coordinator for CareersTV and HelpTV for a number of years. Her career path has been a twisty and turn-y one. She is a professional actor and playwright who has also worked in career development and arts administration, and has studied visual communications and massage therapy. Jana is thrilled to be a part of the CareersTV team, pulling together all of her transferrable skills to help inspire others about all the possibilities available to them!
First Job:
Aside from the usual babysitting gigs, my first job was at a movie theatre, as a popcorn pusher. I worked in the concession in a time before tills, and so was forced to do a lot of fast adding in my head, never a strong suit. This job allowed me to see a whole lot of movies and to offer free tickets to the boy I had a crush on!
Foot in the Door:
My entire career has been an ongoing experiment of the career development concept called, Foot In The Back Door. Not once have I taken the normal route to a job. For example, many years ago I went to the Youth Employment Centre to see a career counsellor for some guidance. During the course of our meeting, the counsellor suggested that I would work well with youth and let me know that they were hiring! I got the job and this was my introduction to the wonderful world of career development.
